Membership Basics

We'd be delighted to welcome you as a member!  Whether you bring expert knowledge or novice questions, we appreciate the value you add to our meetings and activities.

Annual dues are $20 individual, $25 family.  Benefits include:

  • our award-winning newsletter,

  • excellent monthly programs, 

  • many opportunities for informal discussion with Smithsonian mineral scientists and other eminent and friendly mineral experts,

  • MSDC field trips like planned trips to the mineralogical labs and museum at James Madison University or to explore Mount Rogers, VA, with a geology professor from George Washington University,

  • advance notice about mineral and gem shows, local lectures in other venues, and similar ways of learning more about rocks and minerals, 

  • informal advice from many members experienced in local & international collecting, mineral display & cataloguing, mineral identification, micro-minerals, meteorites, fluorescents, fossils, Wildacres, the ins and outs of the Tucson Show and the Rochester Symposium, etc., 

  • input into planning club programs, so that they can respond to members' interests, 

  • camaraderie with a group of people who are warmly welcoming and enthusiastic learners, whether they are newly curious about rocks and minerals or have spent a career in geology.

How To Join

Sign up at a meeting, contact us, or print the membership form pdf_small.gif and mail to the address on the form together with annual dues ($20 individual, $25 family). If you become a new member late in the year, your membership will extend through the following year.

and we are a founding member of the 
Eastern Federation of Mineralogical and Lapidary Societies (EFMLS)
